Wildlife and Birds at Murchison Falls - 4 Days

Murchison Falls National Park with the meandering Victoria Nile and the dramatic Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest protected area, providing a stunning semi arid habitat for a variety of wildlife including, elephant (with herds of up to several hundred), buffalo, kob, warthog, side-striped jackal, hartebeest, giraffe and lion. Aside from the wildlife, the launch trip to the bottom of the Falls is unforgettable, both to experience this mighty river and to see the crocodiles, hippos and birds that bask on its banks. Buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffe, hartebeest, waterbuck and lion can also be seen. Over 450 bird species have been recorded. Track chimpanzees in the nearby Budongo Forest thought to be the largest community in Uganda; it also has an unusual variety of birds.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Thursday
Depart Kampala in the morning stopping at Masindi for lunch. Visit the top of the dramatic Murchison Falls, crashing through a narrow gorge. Brief game viewing in the evening. O/N: Nile Camp/Paraa (LD).

Day 2: Friday
Spend the day in the park. Game viewing north of the Nile, where over 76 mammal species have been recorded, including spotted hyena, patas monkey, and leopard. Later take a launch trip from Paraa to the bottom of the mighty frothy falls, passing through one of the most compelling stretches of the Nile, fringed by borassus palms, acacias, and stands of mahogany. Game viewing along the river is stunning, with some of the largest crocodiles left in Africa, hippos, elephants and birds, including the rare shoebill stork, basking on the banks of the Nile. O/N: Nile Camp/Paraa (BLD).

Day 3: Saturday
In the morning you visit the savannah plains, north of the river that make up the delta circuit, formed by the Victoria Nile as it flows into Lake Albert. It is one of the principal areas for game drives and birdwatching, known for its giraffe herds of 50 animals or more! Several prides of lion feast on the abundant herds of Ugandan kob. During the heat of the day relax at your lodge. Evening game drive. O/N: Nile Camp/Paraa (BLD).

Day 4 : Sunday
An early start. Leave for Pabidi in Budongo forest for a guided nature walk to track chimpanzees. Locating the chimps is easier between May and August as fruit is more readily available. Return to Kampala (B
).
